THE JOURNAL EDITORIAL ROLES
Becoming an Editor
Are you Interested in language, research, and law? Apply to be an editor for The Canadian Law Review. Senior Editors work with legal professionals from the Advisory Board and will mentor students who are passionate about law and policy. The Associate Editors are responsible for editing submissions based on the criteria form established by the Advisory Board and Senior Editors. The Assistant Editors are responsible for reviewing sources for their authenticity and editing McGill-style citations. We are interested in editors who are detail-oriented and are committed to philanthropy through mentorship.
All Editorial Applications are now open. The Application deadline is September 30th at 11:59 pm PST.
Roles & Responsibilities
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Key Responsibilities

Ensure all members of the editorial board are fulfilling their duties in their roles
-
Acting as a resource to support all members of the editorial board and the Junior Research Fellows throughout the writing and editorial process

Host bi-weekly 15-30 minute check-in meetings with each Junior Research fellow, their associate editor(s), and senior editor
-
Meet every month with the CLR communications officer and managing director.

SENIOR EDITOR PUBLISHING REVIEW BOARD
All members of the Review Board must be law students at an eligible Canadian law school. The Review Board makes decisions about hiring JRFs (Junior Research Fellows) and determines which papers move forward in the publishing process. The Review Board meets 5 times:

Evaluation 1: Review finalized paper proposals by JRFs and provide feedback

Evaluation 2: Finalized Draft of JRF Papers - provide feedback & recommendations

Evaluation 3: Determine which papers move forward in the editorial process

Evaluation 4: Final Review of Papers

Evaluation 5: Approval for publishing

SENIOR EDITORS:
Senior Editors are law students who act as mentors for Junior Research Fellows.
Senior Editors are expected to:

Meet with their assigned Junior Research follow throughout the outlining and writing process.

Ensure the papers are well-researched, about an interesting topic, and the writing is clear.

Provide comprehensive guidance and feedback while also allowing the JRF to do the writing.

Required to attend all check-in meetings with the Editor in Chief.

Strong communication skills are an asset.

Ensure the JRF is adhering to McGill-Style citations.

ASSOCIATE EDITORS:
All Associate Editors must be either 1L, 2L or 3L students at an eligible Canadian law school, or graduate students (Masters, PhD students) at an eligible Canadian university. Responsibilities include the following:

Ensure papers written by Junior Research Fellows are accurately sourced;

Do the bulk of McGill-Style Citation review including footnotes and bibliography review;

Meet with the JRF 3-5x per cycle (October-March);
-
Attend all check-in meetings with the Editor-in-Chief; and
-
Report to the Editor-in-Chief and attend training provided by Review Board members.
